Kalshi review: is it legit?

Updated August 2026

The short verdict

Legit, regulated, and genuinely well built. Your real questions are your state and your self-control.

, the whole review, compressed

Kalshi is not a scam, not offshore, and not a gray-market casino. It's a CFTC-regulated exchange where event contracts trade between 1¢ and 99¢ and pay $1 when you're right, the mechanics are in our plain-words explainer. “Is it legit” is the wrong worry. The right ones are below.

What's genuinely good

Money moves on bank rails, ACH, debit, PayPal, Venmo, no crypto wallet required, which makes it the easiest real-money prediction market for a normal American to actually join. Prices are honest percents with no vig baked into the odds. And the board is broad: inflation prints, weather, award shows, and a sports section that now drives much of the volume.

Where it bites

The catchHow much it matters
Fees peak on 50/50s (~7¢ round trip)High if you trade a lot
Blocked in MI, NV, MA (mid-2026)Total, if that's you
Withdrawals take days, not secondsAnnoying
Profits are taxable, forms and allReal, budget for it
Order book has a learning curveA weekend
Nothing disqualifying, but all of it real. Especially the first two.

The fee design deserves one honest sentence: because fees scale with uncertainty, the exciting coin-flip markets, the exact ones beginners flock to, are the most expensive place on the exchange to be wrong slowly.

Who it's for

Someone comfortable risking real money on their read of the world, who wants US regulation and paperwork rather than an offshore shrug. If that's you, it's the cleanest on-ramp in the category. If you mostly want the game, reading percents, backing your calls, building a track record, you can get the entire skill without the bankroll.

What it costs to find out whether you're actually good at this, before Kalshi's fees find out for you.

Quick answers

Is Kalshi legit?+

Yes. It's a CFTC-designated US exchange, regulated federal financial infrastructure, not an offshore betting site. The open questions are about state law and whether the product suits you, not about whether it's real.

Is Kalshi safe?+

As safe as regulation makes it: US-supervised, bank-rail deposits, real paperwork. The risks that remain are market risks, you can simply lose your stake on wrong predictions, and state-level legal fights that could affect access.

Is Kalshi legal in my state?+

Federally it's legal. As of mid-2026, courts have blocked it in Michigan, Nevada and Massachusetts, and more state cases are moving. Check our legality guide for the current picture before depositing.

Kalshi or Polymarket?+

Kalshi if you want bank deposits, US regulation and tax paperwork. Polymarket if you want crypto rails, bigger political volume and near-zero fees. Both show the same kind of percent prices.
